National Staff Training Group

Historically, NSTG has aimed to act as a focus for information and knowledge on issues relevant to the continuous professional development of Road Safety Officers (RSOs). However, the modern road safety professional is not necessarily a traditional Road Safety Officer; the modern practitioner being much more multi-faceted and may deliver road safety interventions as part of their responsibilities for disciplines such as health promotion, active travel, sustainable transport, travel planning and overarching transport strategy. Therefore, the focus must shift to a wider audience of practitioners.

The purpose of NSTG is firstly, to identify the training needs of those within the profession and ensuring that these are catered for; secondly, to establish a menu of existing training opportunities aimed at ensuring that practitioners have the opportunity to maintain and increase professionalism; thirdly, to advise and guide employers and employees on the knowledge and skills required to undertake particular multi-disciplinary roles within the profession; penultimately, to promote qualifications within the profession (including membership of IRSO); and finally, to assess all qualifications and training events to offer quality assurance for employers by providing the NSTG stamp / branding to signify that training providers have met NSTG’s minimum standards criteria.
